Yes, it's only the day after Thanksgiving! You're probably more focused on everything you want to accomplish before Christmas, but I encourage you to start thinking about what you want to accomplish in 2025, too! As you go through the next few weeks, first of all take time to remember the reason for the season--Jesus! Take at least a few minutes for Him every day--with Bible Study, prayer, and reflecting on how you can share the joy of Jesus with others.ย
As you go about errands and preparing for special meals and days, think of how you'd like to see things a year from now. Would you FINALLY like to have the extra bedroom cleaned out so it could be an extra bedroom? Would it bring you joy to see your freezer filled with nutritious, home-made meals that you could put in the crockpot in the morning, to be ready when everyone got home? Do you want to look at your bank account balance with satisfaction, not dread? Would you like to be able to take laundry downstairs without getting short of breath? Think about these things now, and then, in the (usually quieter) week between Christmas and New Year's, you can make goals that are meaningful to you, to make 2025 the best one yet!
I used to be one of those people who, every January 1st, filled a planner with big, multiple, life-changing resolutions and every single step Iโ€™d take in the quest of sticking with each resolution every day. Iโ€™ve made financial, home improvement, mom improvement (me as a mom, not improving my mom!), job, professional, and health (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual) resolutions โ€“ yep, all for the same year! Can you guess how many times I achieved the desired results by the end of the year? Thatโ€™s right, ๐™๐„๐‘๐Ž!
Despite reading many, many books and articles on โ€œ๐’‰๐’๐’˜ ๐’•๐’ ๐’Ž๐’‚๐’Œ๐’† ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐’‘๐’†๐’“๐’‡๐’†๐’„๐’• ๐’“๐’†๐’”๐’๐’๐’–๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’โ€, Iโ€™ve never stuck with them. A โ€œresolutionโ€ became something that lasted only as long as it took to painstakingly plan every detail ofโ€ฆand then give up on. So a few years ago I changed my mindset. Instead of making unrealistic, one-time resolutions, I decided to make goals. ๐Œ๐ฒ ๐ ๐จ๐š๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐ซ๐ž๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐ž๐œ๐ญ ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐จ๐›๐ฃ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ, ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ฌ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฌ.
I now set goals throughout the year. They are often short term, with the focus being for the goal to become a habit, a permanent part of my life. Iโ€™ve never found a โ€œperfectโ€ program, so I use hints and tips from different books and articles Iโ€™ve read, and make up some of my own โ€œright-for-my-lifeโ€ rules or exceptions too.

The first day of the month is a good time to set goals for that month (or longer), or decide to do something every day that month. My sisters and I share monthly goalsโ€”50 squats/day, not eating after 7 PMโ€”something that may not be sustainable forever, but is doable for a short period of time and often gives us a jump start on a less intense but sustainable goal. ๐‘€๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘™๐‘ฆ ๐‘”๐‘œ๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘  are also good for getting a one-time project completedโ€”clean and organize the garage, plan and implement a monthly meal plan, update your resumeโ€™ and start a job search.
The day after Memorial Day, or the day after Labor Day, are other good days to look at what you want to accomplish and make new goals. Maybe quarterly goals will be the right length for you.
๐Ÿฌ"๐‘ด๐’๐’…๐’†๐’“๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’โ€ โ€“ eating a small piece of chocolate to satisfy your sweet tooth โ€“ works for some peopleโ€ฆbut ๐’‡๐’๐’“ ๐’Ž๐’† โ€œ๐’Ž๐’๐’… Itโ€™s easier for me to abstain completely. But I LOVE chocolate and itโ€™s sooooo yummyโ€”I donโ€™t want to cut it out of my life forever! My โ€œright-for-meโ€ rule -- I abstain completely during the week, and eat chocolate only on the weekend. This has been a successful life-change for me! You will be much more successful when you honor your unique personality traits when you make goals.

Since I brush my teeth, get dressed, and start my Bible study right away when I get up, I feel like my day is โ€œstartedโ€ and I rarely go back to bed.
